Top Causes of Death on Long Island

The New York Department of Health collects vital statistics for residents in New York, each year collecting information about birth rates and death rates. In 2015, there were 153,623 deaths. The top three causes of death across the state were heart disease, malignant neoplasms and Chronic Lower Respiratory Disease (CLRD).

Similarly in Suffolk County, heart disease and malignant tumors were the top causes of death, followed by total accidents. There were a total of 11,812 deaths in 2015 in Suffolk.

In Nassau County there were 11,031 deaths in 2015. Heart disease, malignant neoplasms and Cerebrovascular Disease were the top three causes. Nassau County had a much higher death rate of heart disease than both Suffolk County and New York state.
